Apache Derby for Linux is a complete open source database management system (RDBMS) based on Java and SQL.
It aims to be an easy-to-use data management solution for software developers with zero end user administration.
Derby guarantees data integrity and provides sophisticated transaction support. In the default configuration, there is no separate database server to be installed or maintained by the end user.
It can be distributed with embedded options where Derby runs in the same Java virtual machine as the application, or as a server where it runs in the JVM hosting the server.
Derby started as one of IBM's relational databases Cloudscape Java. IBM contributed the code to The Apache Software Foundation and now bases future versions of IBM Cloudscape in the Apache managed code.
Apache Derby is a subproject of the Apache DB project.
